Importance of Sitemap.xml

XML sitemaps serve a very niche purpose in search engine optimization: facilitating indexation. Posting an XML sitemap is kind of like rolling out the red carpet for search engines and giving them a roadmap of the preferred routes through the site. It’s the site owner’s chance to tell crawlers, “I’d really appreciate it if you’d focus on these URLs in particular.” Whether the engines accept those recommendations of which URLs to crawl depends on the signals the site is sending.

What Are XML Sitemaps?

An XML sitemap is a bit of Extensible Markup Language (XML), a standard machine-readable format consumable by search engines and other data-munching programs like feed readers. XML sitemaps convey information about one thing: the URLs that make up a site. Each XML sitemap file follows the same basic form. A one-page site located at would have the following XML sitemap:

Why Use a Sitemap

Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. Of course, you cannot expect that search engines will rush right away to index your changed pages but certainly the changes will be indexed faster, compared to when you don’t have a sitemap.

Also, when you have a sitemap and submit it to the search engines, you rely less on external links that will bring search engines to your site. Sitemaps can even help with messy internal links – for instance if you by accident have broken internal links or orphaned pages that cannot be reached in other way (though there is no doubt that it is much better to fix your errors than rely on a sitemap).

If your site is new, or if you have a significant number of new (or recently updated pages), then using a sitemap can be vital to your success. Although you can still go without a sitemap, it is likely that soon sitemaps will become the standard way of submitting a site to search engines. Though it is certain that spiders will continue to index the Web and sitemaps will not make the standard crawling procedures obsolete, it is logical to say that the importance of sitemaps will continue to increase.

Sitemaps also help in classifying your site content, though search engines are by no means obliged to classify a page as belonging to a particular category or as matching a particular keyword only because you have told them so.

Having in mind that the sitemap programs of major search engines (and especially Google) are still in beta, using a sitemap might not generate huge advantages right away but as search engines improve their sitemap indexing algorithms, it is expected that more and more sites will be indexed fast via sitemaps.

A Good Site Map does the following:

  • Information about images or videos that can be found on a website or the duration of a video and its subject.
  • General information about the website, e.g. when it was last updated.
  • Shows a quick, easy-to-follow overview of your site.

  • Provides a pathway for the search engine robots to follow.

  • Provides text links to every page of your site.

  • Quickly shows visitors how to get where they need to go.

  • Utilizes important keyword phrases.

Submitting Pages to Search Engines for Website Optimization

You’ve probably seen “submission” services advertised for SEO, perhaps in the form of spam in your inbox, offering to submit your website to hundreds of search engines, over and over. In most cases these submission services are a total waste of time and money. Here’s how to get your website into the search engines.

  • You must have links pointing to your website. If other sites don’t care enough about yours to link to it, why should the search engines care enough to index it? The more links the better.

  • Use a sitemap tool (such as that built into your site-creation tool or an external service such as to create an XML sitemap, and put it in the root of your website. The XML sitemap is, in effect, an index of all the pages in your site.

  • In your robots.txt file, add a line pointing to your XML sitemap, like this:

  • Create Google and Bing “Webmaster” accounts; you’ll use these to submit information about your site. Not only is this the preferred method for letting them know about your site, they’ll give you lots of interesting information about how they view your site:

  • “Verify” or “Authenticate” your site with Google and Bing Webmaster consoles; you’ll do that by placing a small text file in the root of your website, or a special meta-tag in your home page. Once you’ve done that, you can access the reports about your site that both Google and Bing provide.

  • Don’t forget to spend some time looking at all the information the Webmaster accounts provide you. For instance, Google shows you your “sitelinks”; the small links that sometimes appear under your listing, when it appears at the top of the search results. Google even allows you to block some of the sitelinks, if you don’t like them, and may send you important messages about your website, particularly if you’re doing something the search engine doesn’t like.

  • You may also want to submit to local directories, or directories related to your particular industry. Search Google or Bing for directories, or go to Yahoo! directory and look for web directories in each category.

Submitting Sitemaps to Google

Google’s URL submit is very quick and easy. Just go to Google’s web page for URL submitting, type in your URL, type in the message that ensures Google you are an individual not a software robot and click “add URL.”

You can also submit your site map to Google via their Webmaster Tools.

Submit Site to Bing

Bing allows you to submit your URL, just like Google.  You will first need to have a Bing login, then go to Bing’s Webmaster Tools page. Once logged in simply type in the URL of your homepage and press “submit”. You will also want to have the URL for the .xml version of your sitemap readily available, as it will ask for this in the first step of submitting your domain. After submitting you will have to verify ownership of the domain. This can be a little tricky if you are not savvy with HTML, as you will need to add a small snippet of code to the header of your site in order to pass this verification process. Once verified, you have competed to process of Submitting Sitemap.
