What is Domain Authority?

Domain authority is a logarithmic score (ranging from 0-100) by Moz, which predicts how well a domain (web page) will rank in the search engine results. It is based on some other factors like Moz Rank, Moz Trust, social signals, linking root domains, total Backlink profile, user experience, site loading time, traffic, etc.

Scoring a DA of 30 from 20 is easier than getting it to 90 from 80. Often authoritative sites like Wikipedia, Facebook and Google itself enjoy the ultimate DA score of 100. But that doesn’t mean websites with DA 50-90 are considered lower in rank.

It is a comparative value which means your site might see a degradation of domain authority if it is not updated or does not hold the quality signals true.

Domain Authority Factors

Domain authority shows how strong your site is as compared to others in SERPs rankings. It has nearly dozens of factors that are considered while calculating DA, so it is hard to influence DA with just concentrating on any one factor. Here is a complete guide on how to increase your domain authority. I have explained the factors that are the key players in deciding the DA of a site.

Domain authority is calculated on the basis of so many factors out of which the following play a Important role:

Deep Linking

When you are building an authoritative website, make sure that all the inner pages of your blog/website are strongly built to each other. Create authority for all the pages you have in your website, and optimize each page for the specific keyword it is targeting. You should tell Google that all the internal pages are as much as important to rank well, just like the home page or any other popular page of your website. So we need to build a lot of backlinks for internal pages in order to show up in Google.

Link Diversity

Link Diversity is an Off-Page SEO concept you need to understand for better Domain Authority rank. Link diversity is a SEO term which is used to decide the range of different links pointing to your website. If you are trying to get similar kind of links from a site again and again, Google doesn’t give much value to that page or URL you are trying to rank on. Instead, its better to diversify the links from different sites and sources, so that each link is calculated as a different entity to your targeted page.

Quality Content

You know the fact that a website should contain high quality content to rank up in Google. So how is this related to Domain Authority? Well, it is! After the Google panda update, many websites lost their authority in Internet, as they lost their low quality pages in search engine positions. When you write high quality content, people do link it from their websites, other resources to share the content among their networks. So the links which point to your website from other websites is an added advantage to your site popularity. There are many other metrics you need to follow to keep your content quality rich.

Some of them are:

Avoid duplicate content issues.

Write fresh and genuine content.

Teach something new to your readers.

Never stuff keywords into your article.

Check for grammar and spelling corrections.

Write a huge article with amazing information.

Write the content for users (not for search engines).

Guide users to a relevant content and add some value to the post.

Never host too many ads or promotional links in your article content.

Don’t make silly mistakes like improper title tags and meta descriptions.

Use Social Network for Website

If your website actively participating in social media platforms like Twitter, Stumble Upon, Reddit, Pinterest, Facebook and etc, Google surely shoots up your website to top 10 rankings of first page. They recently updated many algorithms to rank websites on social media authority, appearance. If your website’s social reach is highly popular, then the site authority will surely go up gradually, which will affect your site rankings in search engine positions.

It looks for how many sites are linking to your site and that indirectly helps to increase the value of your site.

Delete Bad Links

We all love to create backlinks for our site, but it’s harmful to our site to have bad links.

We create real active backlinks, but there is a probability that your links are not active now. The site linking to you may be not active now or it may be that your link has broken.

So you should check all your links again and again and make sure to delete the bad links.

There are lots of ways to remove bad backlinks – you can directly message the website’s owner or if the owner is not responding, then you should use the Google disavow tool. This tool is especially for deleting your bad links.

Make Sure your Site is Mobile Friendly

Your site should be mobile friendly. If your site is not responsive, then it will affect your domain authority. Out of those 40 tests which Moz does while checking your blog’s DA, it also tests if your site is mobile friendly or not.

If your site is not responsive then don’t panic, you can make your site responsive quickly. You will have to do some coding in your template. Just search on Google, and you can get the code, just copy and paste these codes into your site.

You will have to keep patience because Domain authority also depends on your domain age. If your domain is new, then it needs much hard work and time to improve domain authority.

Text Links

Text links or links with keywords are excellent way to increase domain authority of your blog but only making text links might look spammy.

So, try to make a balance between all your different types of links like text links, do-follow links, no-follow links, image links, etc.

Domain authority vs Page authority

Domain authority is a ranking factor in Google which measures a website/domain’s authority by the number of credible sites linking back to it. Page Authority on the other hand is a measure of a page’s likelihood to rank highly in the SERPs. The higher the Page Authority, the more like the page will rank highly in the SERPs.

Domain authority must not be confused with page authority that is a completely different metric. While domain authority gives you the ranking of the site as a whole, page authority is the score of that single page in question.

Domain authority is constant across the whole site, but page authority changes across sub-domains of the same root domain.

Better content means better everything else. You can improve your domain authority. It’s all about your content.

Link building (and link attraction) campaigns that increase Domain Authority are often very clever combinations of several types of marketing. If you have an example of a strategy that has worked well for you, please let us know with a comment below!
